Some old new stuff, Cousins, Tours 01/07/2012

Well it's high time I posted these posters. Rather, high time I posted anything here. I've been spending a majority of my time doing merch work for bands and not that many posters were made. Here are some of the ones that were sprinkled into a very hectic schedule and some of the stories behind them.

Smallstone Records Showcase posters:

Scott hit me up to do some more stuff for his mighty label. At this time summer was winding down. I was preparing for a small tour through the South and we were ramping down our gardens here at Mercerrock Manor. All the vegetation throughout the posters were inspired by the some of the stuff grown here. That sounds very hippy but it's nice to be able to walk away from a drawing table and into a decent garden when yer stumped. The two posters were a "Garden Queen" concept starting with Philly and blossoming with the Chicago poster. Somehow this fit the bands and Smallstone.

Might Could Savannah

A collage poster I put together for Might Could as I jumped in the van and barn stormed the South. My first time in any kind tour experience. It was educational, inspiring, grueling, not normal, fun as hell and the time of my life!
There was talk of doing a whole tour poster but it never came to fruition. I had to have some art with me for the band and what we were doing so I picked one city. Savannah.
Savannah had the most meaning to me cause I was supposed to study art at SCAD. We were lucky enough to stay with Andrew from Black Tusk's house. The sculptures Andrew's lovely lady made throughout the house were amazing. It was like walking through a museum of odd awesome. Food and beer in belly we went to the show.
The show was full of bands we all knew and graphics art majors. Peeps showed massive respect that I was showing work but well..it was full of bands we knew and graphics arts majors. I wasn't selling anything. No bother. I was having a blast. I decided to party down. Probably too much. All the Black Tusk boys broed down and Athon sent me over the edge with some shots. An art student started complaining to me about going to school and I set him straight (if yer reading this man ignore that advice).
All the bands slayed and it was an amazing night for me.
Thanks to Black Tusk, Primate, Whores and the Jinx crew.
Very special Thanks to Might Could (Erik, T.J., Ryan and Kevin) for the time of my life.
Tour quotes:
"Son! I'm not your Daddy"
"Sounds like someone's gonna consummate gay relations"
"Fuck you Jill"
"Coming in hot!"
"I'm gonna piss all over Metallica."
"$2500, a smoke machine and a garage door and IT"S ON!"
"Will somebody PLEASE put on some country music before I suck a dick!"
"Don't be puttin cheese on Meatwad's burger."
"I'm gonna duct tape that guy."
"Phillies are losing broe...Sorry"
"I'll race you to it."
"I'll get drunk and prove it to ya!!!"
"Girl....GET IN THE VAN!!!!!!!!!!!"

Cousins

The Weedeater and Sourvein posters were done mainly for friends and to contribute to a scene I believe in. It's kinda a coincidence that both posters were done with cousins being in each of the bands.
The Sourvein poster came upon a very busy July for me. I couldn't even go to the show but damn it I was gonna get a poster done for it. I printed the poster in a mad dash. Made arrangements for the poster to be delivered. Then I realized I put the wrong date on the poster and bagged delivering the poster out of embarrassment. I hung with Weedeater later and told them the story of how I put the wrong date on a poster for Sourvein. Dixie and the boys laughed their asses off. They decided I should do a whole series of posters with the wrong dates on them. Just to screw with people.
At the time I just laughed at the concept but after thinking about it I kinda like the anarchy of a series of posters that never would happen. Motorhead at George and Gina's Wedding? Sure that sounds like fun.
Well this poster was made and I have a pile for T-Roy. I also have a pile for you too. Looks better at yer place than mine.

The Weedeater poster was made for two reasons. I adore Weedeater and the recent friendship I struck up with John Hopkins. If you don't already know John Hopkins is soundman extraordinaire for many bands but mainly Weedeater. That and all around awesome dude. Well John was coming back to Philly with Weedeater and reached out to me to make sure I knew I had a hook up to get into the show. When people do this for me I hate to come to the show empty handed. It just feels rude if someone does you a favor and you don't do one in return. Well I had some extra time and some extra paper so I whipped up a poster for them to sell. Apparently they sold out by the next show. I was very pleased to hear this. I have a few left so snatch them up
Much thanks to John, Nick and the Weedeater boys for a great night.

So there's some stories behind some posters. If you read all of this well, bless ya. Thanks as always for the time and support. Stay tuned. It's about to get even more weird.

Kvelertak Skeletonwitch Zoroaster 10/25/2011

Good times at Johnny Brenda's last night. I completely forgot Zoroaster was in town this weekend but managed to make the show they were playin with Kvelertak and Skeletonwitch. It was great to see Dylan and Nick who was traveling with them too. Good friends. It was a mellow night at Mercerrock Manor after the show. The boys were driving since 2 a.m. the night before and had to be in Columbus the next day. Hello 9 hour drive! I didn't envy them at all.

Ok show review. A local Philly crust band opened the show. They were a ton of fun. I forget their damn name but the were rad.

Zoroaster next. No crazy lights and smoke machines anymore kids. Just the band. Very very cool. I was excited and very proud they were at Johnny Brendas in front of a crowd. The last time they played there Philly yawned and didn't show up in their usual hipster fashion. This time a great crowd and they were super charged. I'm biased but it's one of the best shows I've seen them play. New bass player Mike held it down and strangled. Speaking of stranglehold there was a Ted Nuggent jam involved in their set. Doom happened. All was well.

I adore Skeletonwitch. They are a fucking machine on and off the stage. Usually with touring bands it's 23 hours of bullshit for an hour an awesome. The vibe I get from Skeletonwitch is the 23 hours before matter nothing. It's just a speed bump for the 30 to 40 minutes of them tearing your head off. Now I missed a quarter of their set loading out Zoroaster and shooting the shit with Baizley for second. Baroness posters anyone? The 3/4 of the set I caught was just devastating. All genres of metal sharpened into a midwestern knife and stabbed into yer ear hole.

I never heard Kvelertak before. Sorry I'm not the hippest dude on the planet. They will probably hate this but I thought a very very MC5. Rolling heavy swing. I always love not hearing a note of a band and then getting blown away. That happened. There was some talk about some tech problems that they would be pissed about after the set but I didn't notice. It cracks me up when bands lose it over some tech problems. It's a rock show peeps. It's not supposed to be perfect. Well they didn't lose it and I was very happy about it. One of the members brought it up after and I immediately told him to knock it off. They rocked. Get in the van do it again. They laughed and I'm sure they are doing it again tonight.

A great show always inspires me to get some shit done. I had a bit of a block going on and after lastnight that's been lifted. Go google all the bands and find out where they are playing. It's a great bill with a little bit of everything for everyone. .

Man I need to update more often. Since my last post there has been some amazing things that have happened to me. I tried to write them all in one post but but it started to turn into a novel. I'll try and keep it short.

Some posters happened. Two Small Stone Records. Thanks to Scott and the Small Stone Crew. Always a pleasure. Tune into their noise. Weedeater one color print. Thanks to the Weedeater boys and my friends John Hopkins and Nick Hood. It was a great night. Glad to call you guys friends.

The Might Could tour I did through the south was amazing. The stories I have could be a novel so I think I'll go with some thanks so I won't bore you.

Thanks to the Might Could for taking care of me on the road and tearing it up on every stop on the road.

Thanks to Larson for popping my tour cherry and getting me dirty.

T.J. for slaying constantly and knowing when to call bullshit and have fun.

Kevin KEEEEEEEEEEVrock for just going with the flow and crushing.

Ryan for the phillies scores, making us go to Dimebag's grave and paying respects, and for saying shit that I wanted to get tattooed on me. "I'll get drunk and prove it to ya!"

The Black Tusk boys for crazy support. Andrew and Sue for putting us up. Sue's sculptures are still inspiring me. James for taking the time. Meant a ton. And Athon for getting me loaded on Wild Turkey. If I was an ass in Savannah I apologize but punch Athon in the arm.

Travis from Whores /Zoroaster

Bill form Primate/Mastodon

The kid who told me he wanted to quit Savannah School of Art and Design. Keep working sissy

Hemi at the punk house in Raleigh.

Brother Dan from Zoroaster and Megan. Ya made Atlanta for me. Thanks a ton Dan for the morning convo. It's helped me beyond belief,

Brother Henry form Saint Vitus and friends. Thanks for letting me act like a child in an adult's hot topic. PEOPLE! The new Saint Vitus is gonna destroy!

Brother Beer for letting me stay in the 80's horror film room. Best sleep I've ever had.

Mexican Ladies at the Night Rocker.

Sister Mikki for showing up after her lame shift in Austin just to say hello. You and Iron Works made Austin for me. Austin tattoo shops should really cater to walk in traffic. Just saying.

Houston please stay HOOD!

My Little Rock Family! Ya made my last night on tour amazing.

So that was some of my tour with Might Could. Much Thanks to everyone and anyone who came out to see Might Could and myself. The enthusiasm shown my way on this tour was humbling and I can't thank everyone enough.

New project update very very soon. It's on peeps!

I'll start it out how I always do. I've been busy so I haven't updated in awhile so here we go.

I recently finished two more shirts for Lamb of God for their only date they are playing this year up in Canada. Always a blast working with those guys. Now Morton has me hooked on NASCAR. GREAT! Another sports distraction. Kidding. It's a ton of fun.

Currently working with Hatebreed on some shirts.

Two more prints are being drawn for Small Stone Records for the two showcases they have coming up in Chicago and Philly. Scott is always on the hustle. More info on that very soon.

New Orleans wall of sound haarp and I are going to get some work going very shortly.

There has been some talk about getting some artwork done for the YOB/Dark Castle tour. I think I may have to get on my horse and stoke the flames with that a little more.

The Hail!Hornet record I did the graphics for a ways back is coming out. Check link below. This record will melt your face. Very very excited that this is seeing the light of day. Thanks to everyone in Hail!Hornet and Relapse records.

SXSW 2011 03/28/2011

Well my trip to Austin for SXSW was a complete success. It's taken me till now to really decompress from the trip and process everything.

First I must thank everyone who came to my booth at Flatstock and shook my hand and all the cats who bought some of my work. There is so many talented and brilliant artists at that thing that any time one of you guys made an effort to come see me was greatly appreciated.
For me to be able to talk with a bunch of my peers at one time is amazing too. I'd like to list all the great artists that were at this thing but it would take forever. That being said I learn a bunch from these people every time I go to Flatstock in Austin and come home with a renewed energy. Thanks to everyone at API for organizing this. They really do a great job.
MUSIC! Man there is so much at once that its overwhelming when one goes to SXSW. For me, it's great to see the bands I'm into and cheer on the ones I'm friends with but I really go to find that one band I've never heard of. The one that's gonna floor me. This happened the first night I got down there. It was a travel day so I was beat. Every show had a line and we decided to go see Kylesa and say hello to my good friend and talented artist John Santos who was tour managing Kylesa. So we waited in line with a bunch of kids who were pissed the doors weren't opened at 8 and I knew they weren't gonna open til 9. Tired and standing in a line with gouchy people sucks. At this point I just want to go into the show say hi to John and crash at the room. We finally get in and we chat with John for a bit and at this point I'm ready to go (I really hate flying and can never sleep on a plane).
Then it happened. First band. First night. First beer. Mammoth Grinder went on! I shoulda been hip to this band but I'm not the hippest guy on the planet. They completely devastated. So energy re-newed my trip was off with a bang. I got to see a full set by the Roller which was great. I always miss them. Kylesa was great again.
The Small Stone Records Showcase I did for the artwork was great. The highlight for me was getting to see Sasquatch again. They played the day before outside of Flatstock and said the only reason they played it was "...because Mercer was there." It really meant a lot. All the bands were great. A real pleasure doing work for Small Stone. Great label.

The Metalliance Tour showcase was the hottest show in Austin the night they played down there. People who weren't even into heavy music were saying to me "Are you going to THE metal show tonight?" At this point I didn't even know if I could get in and I did the art. SXSW is funny that way if you don't have a grand for a badge. Well people went to bat for me to get me on the list. The nail in the coffin was when the Saint Vitus crew (and I mean the entire band) argued to get me into the show. Much thanks to the Metalliance Tour peeps and Saint Vitus for showing me an amazing evening. Every band slew that night and I got to hang with a ton of people I haven't seen in awhile. Thanks to Dan from Zoroaster for dragging me around and getting pictures with everyone on the planet. I'm not a picture guy. An amazing night.
There are a bunch more stories I could go on about but we could be here all night. If I haven't mentioned something here that happened down in the Big Star state please forgive me but yer not forgotten. See ya next year. It's gonna get heavier!
